Most of the Internet’s top 200,000 HTTPS websites are insecure, group says – Computerworld (Lucian Constantin)

Ninety percent of the Internet’s top 200,000 HTTPS-enabled websites are vulnerable to known types of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) attack, according to a report released Thursday by the Trustworthy Internet Movement (TIM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to solving Internet security, privacy and reliability problems.

The report is based on data from a new TIM project called SSL Pulse, which uses automated scanning technology developed by security vendor Qualys, to analyze the strength of HTTPS implementations on websites listed in the top 1 million published by Web analytics firm Alexa.

SSL Pulse checks what protocols are supported by the HTTPS-enabled websites (SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, etc.), the key length used for securing communications (512 bits, 1024 bits, 2048 bits, etc.) and the strength of the supported ciphers (256 bits, 128 bits or lower).

An algorithm is used to interpret the scan results and assign a score between 0 and 100 to each HTTPS configuration. The score is then translated into a grade, with A being the highest (over 80 points).

One in 10 secondhand hard drives in U.K. contain personal data – Computerworld (Lucas Mearian)

A study by the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office found that more than one in 10 secondhand hard drives sold or given away in Britain contains recoverable personal information of the original owner.

Upon releasing the the results of the study this week, the data protection regulatory agency urged consumers to take better care of their data. It also released a list of ways individuals can securely delete personal information from old devices.

“Many people will presume that pressing the delete button on a computer file means that it is gone forever,” U.K. Information Commissioner Christopher Graham in a statement. “However this information can easily be recovered,”

Virginia State Court Judge Allows Defendants to Use Predictive Coding : Electronic Discovery Law

Global Aerospace, Inc. v. Landow Aviation, L.P., No. CL 61040 (Vir. Cir. Ct. Apr. 23, 2012)

In this Virginia state court case, the defendants asked to be allowed to use predictive coding for the processing and production of their own ESI.  The Loudon County Circuit Judge granted the request, and “allowed” the defendants to use predictive coding, subject to objections plaintiffs may want to raise once they obtain the resulting production from the defendants.

Weighing the Legal Ramifications of the Wal-Mart Bribery Case – NYTimes.com (Peter Henning)

The United States government puts a premium on corporate cooperation in foreign bribery cases, relying on companies to conduct thorough internal investigations and voluntarily disclose any wrongdoing.

Indications that Wal-Mart Stores may have taken steps to keep an internal investigation from digging deeper into $24 million in questionable payments — and later promoting an executive who may have been implicated in them — may affect how the government decides to proceed against the giant retailer.

Wal-Mart first disclosed in December that it had started “a voluntary internal review of its policies, procedures and internal controls pertaining to its global anticorruption compliance program.” That review was the result of reporting by The New York Times about bribery by Wal-Mart de México to secure permits and approvals to build new stores.

Who owns your files on Google Drive? | CNET News (Zack Whittaker)

Within hours of Google launching its new online storage service, the terms and service have come under heavy fire by the wider community for being able to potentially stifle innovation and harm the users’ Google seeks to serve.

After Dropbox and Microsoft’s SkyDrive — the two largest online storage services on the Web — Google was late to the party by a number of years. While Google needed no advertising to drum up support, what may hold back uptake is that as per the terms and conditions of using the product, the files you upload to the Google Drive product undergoes a rights transition.

A quick analysis of Google’s terms of service shows how the search company owns the files you upload the minute they are submitted, and can in effect do anything it wants to your files — and that’s final. But there is a small catch.
