Microsoft User Researcher has a unique opportunity for Seattle/Puget Sound area legal professionals! Our researchers are looking for legal professionals who utilize eDiscovery in the workplace for an upcoming research study. Participants will have an opportunity to use prototypes of new ideas Microsoft is exploring for eDiscovery. Your feedback will help decide which features will be included in future versions of Office.

This 2-hour study will take place on Microsoft’s Redmond campus starting Wednesday, July 6th. All participants will be offered a choice of Microsoft software, hardware or games in appreciation for their time and feedback.

Microsoft issued a security advisory that said an attacker could use the vulnerability for remote code execution and install programs; view, change or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Microsoft said it is not aware of any attacks relating to the vulnerability. The advisory provides mitigations and workarounds for the problem.

In addition to developing a “comprehensive security update” to address the problem, Microsoft said it’s “monitoring the threat landscape and working with partners through the Microsoft Active Protections Program to take action against malicious sites that may attempt to exploit this vulnerability.”

The company, based in Redmond, Washington, was given until Jan. 11 — five months from the original order issued in August — to make the change by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington. Word is part of Microsoft’s Office software, used by more than 500 million people.

The court today upheld a verdict which has since grown to $290 million won by closely held I4i LP of Toronto. The dispute is over a patented invention related to customizing extensible markup language, or XML, a way of encoding data to exchange information among programs. Microsoft has called it an “obscure functionality.”
