But a furrowed brow, a gesticulating hand, and a beaming smile are all lost on computers. Now, researchers at MIT and Tufts are experimenting with a way for computers to gain a little insight into our inner world.

Their system, called Brainput, is designed to recognize when a person’s workload is excessive and then automatically modify a computer interface to make it easier. The researchers used a lightweight, portable brain monitoring technology, called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), that determines when a person is multitasking. Analysis of the brain scan data was then fed into a system that adjusted the user’s workload at those times. A computing system with Brainput could, in other words, learn to give you a break.

According to a new Bloomberg report, when the Federal Bureau of Investigation met with top law firms last year, there were a number of warnings and revelations, with the principal problems being cybercrime and corporate vulnerability. Edward Pearson, from York, in Northern England, used several covert cyberweapons, including the notorious bank-account-stealing Zeus Trojan, to steal credit card numbers and other confidential data from his United Kingdom victims during an 18-month stretch ending Aug. 30, 2011, the Daily Mail reported.

On his computers, police found 200,000 stolen PayPal accounts, the numbers of 2,701 bank cards and 8,110,474 names, dates of birth and postcodes for U.K. residents. Police investigating Pearson’s fraud said if all the details of what he had harvested were printed out, it would fill 67,500 sheets of paper.

Over the next few months, Google’s search engine will begin spitting out more than a list of blue web links. It will also present more facts and direct answers to queries at the top of the search-results page.

The changes to search are among the biggest in the company’s history and could affect millions of websites that rely on Google’s current page-ranking results. At the same time, they could give Google more ways to serve up advertisements.

Google isn’t replacing its current keyword-search system, which determines the importance of a website based on the words it contains, how often other sites link to it, and dozens of other measures. Rather, the company is aiming to provide more relevant results by incorporating technology called “semantic search,” which refers to the process of understanding the actual meaning of words.
