The participation by Intel is a sign of how uniformly cloud data centers rely on the x86 architecture. Even IBM, manufacturer of the Power series of microprocessors, built its Research Triangle Park cloud on x86 servers.

Speeding cloud development and interoperability is likely to speed Intel and AMD chip consumption. That’s why Intel orchestrated the alliance. It will set best practices and standards that allow enterprises to proceed with cloud operations.

Security experts by and large agree that security via obscurity is not a wise model for protecting customers over the long term.  That’s exactly the model Apple has employed successfully for some time now.  However, its luck finally appears to be running short.

Hot on the heels of a newly discovered iOS exploit that allows access to locked iPhones, new reports [1] [2] from security research firms SecureFirm and Intego reveals that a new trojan is targeting Mac users using a vulnerability in OS X’s Java player.

According to the Intego report the new malware, trojan.osx.boonana.a, is really a reworked version of the Koobface malware, which has attacked Windows in the past.  The malware acts as a worm when it spreads and as a trojan when it is infecting your computer.

Users may encounter the worm via links posted on Facebook, 마이 스페이스, 지저귐, and other websites.  When clicking the link, the applet attempts to run.  Users can stop the infection before it starts by denying the applet permission to run when OS X’s Java player pops up a dialogue.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has again kicked up something of an online firestorm with a statement about privacy.

In a CNN interview Monday, Schmidt responded to questions about what Google knows about people by saying that if people don’t like having their homes photographed for Google Street View for the world to see, they can “just move.”

The comment came during an interview on the Parker Spitzer show. “With Street View, we drive by exactly once, so you can just move,” said Schmidt, eliciting uncomfortable laughter from interviewer Kathleen Parker. “The point is, we only do it once. This is not a monitoring situation.”

Those few sentences stirred up the blogosphere, and various news sites erupted with stories about Schmidt apparently telling people they can move if they don’t like having their houses on Street View.

A whistleblower who exposed serious contamination problems at GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) pharmaceutical manufacturing operations has been awarded $96m (£60m).

Cheryl Eckard’s payment is thought to be the biggest ever handed to a US whistleblower. It was awarded after an eight-year fight, which ended yesterday, when GSK agreed to pay the US government $750m to settle civil and criminal charges that it manufactured and sold adulterated drug products.

Speaking outside the federal courthouse in Boston after the award was agreed, Eckard admitted she was “a little emotional”.

Microsoft today launched Office for Mac 2011, the newest version of its application suite designed for Mac OS X.

One analyst immediately dubbed it “the best Office ever.”

Office 2011 is Microsoft’s f사무실or the Mac since January 2008. Microsoft added the once-scorned “ribbon” interface that debuted in Windows’ Office 2007, dropped the Entourage e-mail client in favor of a Mac flavor of Windows’ 시야, and restored Visual Basic-based macros.

Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg said the new suite is Microsoft’s most impressive suite effort to date.

“This is the best Office ever, not just on the Mac,” said Gartenberg. “It brings the Mac version to parity with the Windows version, but it still feels like Mac software, not a Windows port. Mac Office doesn’t feel like you walked into your house in the dark and someone rearranged all the furniture.”

Several new or restored features in Office for Mac 2011 were long requested by veteran users, particuarly a closer cousin to Windows’ Outlook and the return of macros. Both were especially important for IT staffers who had to figure out how to integrate Macs into their organizations and users bent on having tools equal to their Windows brethren.
