Amazon Could Disrupt Apple’s Tablet Dominance, Analyst Says – WSJ.com

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) could disrupt a tablet market dominated by Apple Inc. (AAPL) if the online retailer is willing to sell its own, widely-anticipated device at a loss, according to research published Monday.

Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps wrote that while “Amazon taking on Apple is a bit like David taking on Goliath,” if Amazon proves willing to sell its tablet relatively cheaply and leverage its brand and surplus of online content, it could make a significant mark.

Specifically, if Amazon prices the as-yet-undisclosed tablet at less than $300, the Seattle-based company could sell up to 5 million units in the fourth quarter of this year, the analyst wrote.

Apple currently sells versions of the iPad for prices ranging between $499 and $829.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Amazon could release its tablet as soon as October.

Apple IPad’s ‘Buzz Saw’ Success Carves Into Consumer PC Sales at HP, Dell – Bloomberg

The iPad is wreaking havoc on the personal-computer market.

Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ)’s consumer PC sales plunged 23 percent last quarter, and the company lopped $1 billion off its annual sales forecast. And while rival Dell Inc. (DELL) beat analysts’ estimates because of corporate demand, its sales to consumers slumped 7.5 percent. More than 70 million tablets like the Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPad will be sold in 2011, a total that will balloon to 246 million in three years, Jefferies & Co. said yesterday.

“You’re walking into a buzz saw,” Jane Snorek, a senior research analyst at Nuveen Asset Management in Milwaukee, said of the iPad. Her firm manages more than $200 billion in assets. “The tablet is going to replace at least the home computer.”

At 7.3-inches across with a color screen and an array of popular downloadable games like “Angry Birds,” applications for watching movies and reading magazines, and software for word processing and spreadsheets, the iPad has siphoned off more PC sales than analysts and executives predicted.

Microsoft Admires How Apple Products Just Work – CRN

Microsoft NSDQ:MSFT has zeroed in on what makes Apple NSDQ:AAPL products so popular that people will wait hours in line just for a chance to purchase them. But will this realization be reflected in the next version of Windows, or just used as a compass for product development down the road?

One of a series of purported Windows 8 slides that leaked earlier this week focuses on the uncomplicated, “It just works” nature of Apple product design. The slide describes a virtuous circle in which a user experience thats “low in friction” makes the products easy for people to use, which in turn leads to satisfied customers placing high value in the products.

“This is something people will pay for!” reads the slide.

AT&T Sees NY Network Upgrades Wrapped Up By 3Q, SF By 4Q – WSJ.com

AT&T Inc. (T) is expected to wrap up its network improvements for New York by the third quarter, with San Francisco to follow three months later, according to the company’s operations chief.

The Dallas telecommunications giant is working to upgrade its network in the two key media markets, which were hit by intense traffic primarily caused by the Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone. But the company has been delayed by component shortages and zoning issues, which have been particularly cumbersome in San Francisco.

The improvements are critical to AT&T repairing the reputation of the network, which suffers from the perception that its coverage lags behind rival Verizon Wireless. It also will enable the company to offer additional features, such as tethering for the iPhone, which allows a handset’s cellular signal to be used like a modem.

Other AT&T smartphones allow tethering.

“It’s taking longer than we’d like,” said John Stankey, chief executive of AT&T Operations, in an interview with Dow Jones. “The dynamics of San Francisco are different.”

The New York improvements are proceeding on schedule, he said, adding that the work in San Francisco is roughly 90 days behind as a result of the logistical complications.

Last month, the company said the number of dropped calls on its third-generation, or 3G, network fell 6% in Manhattan and 9% in the New York metropolitan area, but acknowledged that San Francisco was behind. Earlier Wednesday, Ralph de la Vega, who runs AT&T’s wireless and consumer businesses, told investors that the New York metrics have “improved significantly.”

HP Skewers Apple’s iPad With Slate Demo Videos – Hardware – IT Channel News by CRN

Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HPQ) is poised to challenge Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) and its hot new iPad with the HP Slate. Slate won't be available in time for iPad’s planned April 3 launch, but HP is wasting no time taking aim at Apple with a pair of subtle, but unmistakable jabs at Apple’s personality and the iPad’s lack of support for Adobe Flash.

A pair of videos, since shared and re-posted all over the blogosphere, surfaced on HP’s Voodoo Blog just a few hours after Apple aired a surprise TV commercial for iPad in primetime during Sunday’s Oscar presentation.

HP debuted Slate, a Windows 7-based tablet, at CES in January.

“With this Slate product, you’re getting a full Web browsing experience in the palm of your hand,” wrote Phil McKinney, vice president and CTO for HP’s personal systems group (PSG). “No watered-down Internet, no sacrifices.
