Hey, Wolfram|Alpha Isn’t Just for Pros | TIME.com (Harry McCracken)

Wolfram|Alpha–the “computational knowledge engine” that lets you pose questions about math, history, and other factual stuff and get reliable responses, often in the form of beautifully-done infographics–is an extraordinary creation. But more than two and a half years after its debut, it’s still not the Google-like breakout hit I keep thinking it should be.

On Wednesday, the site’s creators are launching the most ambitious update its gotten since it launched, a premium version called Wolfram|Alpha Pro that will cost $2.99 a month for students and $4.99 a month for the rest of us. Dieter Bohn of The Verge has a meaty look at what’s new, including the ability to upload your own data sets, fiddle with the visualizations and download the data behind the engine’s answers.

(MORE: Search, Plus Your World: Google’s Risky Gambit)

Data geeks should enjoy these advanced options. Even if I don’t sign up myself, I’m rooting for the Pro version to be a success, since a Wolfram|Alpha that’s a thriving business has the best shot at being around for a very long time to come.

Motorola Tablet Goof: 4 Security Lessons For Users – Informationweek (Eric Zeman)

Motorola alerted customers on Friday that it shipped about 100 refurbished Xoom tablets that were not completely cleared of the original owner’s data prior to resale. The tablets were sold between October and December of 2011 through Woot.com. Oops.

According to Motorola, some of the compromised data potentially includes user names and passwords for email and social media accounts, as well as other password-protected sites and applications, and possibly even photographs and documents.

First, Motorola is offering customers who purchased a Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi tablet between March and October 2011–and then returned it–a complimentary two-year membership of Experian’s ProtectMyID Alert to mitigate any risks. Experian provides access to consumer credit data, and can be used as a tool to make sure the accidentally shared data is not put to nefarious use. The Xoom was available from a number of retailers during that period, including Amazon.com, Best Buy, BJ’s Wholesale, eBay, Office Max, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, Staples, and others. If you bought one from the aforementioned retailers and returned it, best give Motorola (and Experian) a call.

When Is A Local Resource Not A Good Option For E-Discovery Services?

It is not uncommon to read posts, tweets and emails within the litigation support industry with a firm, corporation or vendor urgently seeking “local” resources at a distant location, whether it be here in the United States or at points around the globe.  While sometimes it is simply a matter of practicality, more often than not it is a desperate attempt to satisfy a client who refuses to acknowledge the terms “travel” or “remote” as part of a polite conversation.  Why might this be?  Well, historically these terms have often resulted in unexpectedly large invoices due to high hourly fees and premium airfare requirements.

One should note that there are a number of locations in the world where there simply is not enough local demand to support a legal technology business.  Many legal systems outside of the US and UK do not have discovery and disclosure requirements, thus there a few resources to support such services.  Not only can this be noted for global finance centers such as Shanghai, Zurich and Dubai, but many regions in the United States where there is not a demand for electronic discovery services.  Some scanning and reprographics shops have taken the initiative to invest in the appropriate software, but unfortunately may not have the in-house knowledge and experience to execute the requirements of a project successfully.  This leaves critical decisions for the corporation and firm involved in a case – blindly search for an unknown vendor with unproven skills or leverage a relationship with a specialist that has a range of direct experience and experience?  At what point does cost – or perceived cost – outweigh potential risks such as spoliation?

There are, however, a growing number of options to the historical norms within the industry.   Boutique companies such as Global EDD Group are bridging the gap between organizations and their growing national and international electronic discovery needs by leveraging proven experience, low operational expenses and an extensive network of resources to offer clients legal technology services around the globe at price points typically associated with local vendors.

So, the next time you have a cross-border or geographically-dispersed matter with e-discovery requirements, take a moment to evaluate all of the options available to you and your client.  You might be very surprised at the robust options available for high quality remote/onsite services.

Advanced E-Discovery Text Analytics from Global EDD Group

Modern organizations have access to abundant sources of data that contain jewels of useful knowledge.  Emails, web pages, memos, call center transcripts, survey responses, claims notes, legal cases, patent descriptions, research articles, and incident reports – all hold valuable pieces of knowledge that are hard to discover because they are hidden within large volumes of raw data or structured datasets not typically indexed for key term searching.  Overwhelmed by the glut and variety of data, law firms and corporations are seeking new methods to analyze large volumes of structured and unstructured data to not only discover key knowledge, but to create case or review strategy as well.

Automated Knowledge Discovery & E-Discovery Text Analytics

Automated Knowledge Discovery (“AKD”) is our service that derives knowledge from text and structured data, including XML files, databases, spreadsheets, web sites, documents, and emails using Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Interactive Visualization and Report Generation.  AKD enables you to gain valuable insight into large diverse data sets by leveraging intelligent data mining and analysis tools to undertake a range of knowledge discovery tasks, including:

Data Source Integration

  • XML Files
  • Spreadsheets
  • Email / PST Files / Exchange Datastores
  • File Shares
  • Databases
  • Delimited Files
  • RSS Feeds
  • Web Sites

Distinct Text Identification

Compares records to determine whether they are duplicates, though comparison is fuzzy in the sense that the two values do not have to be 100% identical in content and form.  Similar to “near duplicate indentication”.

Key Term Linking

Generates a visualization of associations between various keywords so that that relationships between words are well-represented in a set of documents or a column of text values.

Text Clustering

Utilizes phrases find and identify similar groups of documents or records based on the contents of text.

Entity Extraction

  • Dates
  • Human names
  • Organizations
  • Addresses
  • Phones
  • Money Amount
  • Geographic Names

Keyword Extraction

Determines the important concepts discussed in a text via the identification the most frequent keywords and the ability to drill down on each keywords to see how the words are being mentioned.

Phrase Extraction

Statistical determination of phrases by examining the co-occurrences of consecutive words within the text. Stated more simply, if two words occur next to each other repeatedly in several sentences across several documents, it can be statistically assumed that these words constitute a phrase.

Link Analysis

Displays correlations and clusters of terms extracted from a set of documents or text values with the ability to drill down to review the specific relationships.

Complex Searching

Searches for phrases, proximity, by sentence or paragraph, synonyms and alternate term forms and enables the ability to see a ranked list of matching records, search within the results of previous searches, refine search query by providing positive and negative document-based relevance feedback, and  the highlighting of occurrences of words in documents for easy navigation.

Our Automated Knowledge Discovery Services provide valuable insight to any collection of discovery data, far beyond key term browsing typically associated with litigation support systems, many of which simply do not have the ability to process structured data such as SQL databases or “as found” versions of email stores.  Additional benefits of AKD Services include:

  • Mobile platform deployable worldwide
  • Fee structure based on time, not volume
  • No long term commitments, user fees or storage fees
  • Compliments, not replaces, current review workflows and systems
  • Ideal platform for data sampling

Master Data Management Critical to Effective Information Governance: Gartner | eWeek.com (Nathan Eddy)

The MDM market continues to grow because it focuses on specific business drivers and business-led initiatives.

Master data management (MDM) is critical to achieving effective information governance, according to a report from IT research firm Gartner, which noted failure to manage information accurately has been the root cause of several incidents, including the leak of sensitive information to WikiLeaks, and can be fatal to the success of MDM programs. Gartner estimates worldwide MDM software revenue will reach $1.9 billion in 2012, a 21 percent increase from 2011.

MDM is a technology-enabled business discipline in which businesses and IT organizations work together to ensure the uniformity, accuracy, stewardship, semantic consistency and accountability of the organization’s official, shared master data assets. It is increasingly identified by organizations with the launch of a formal enterprise information management (EIM) strategy and the foundation of an information governance program that supports EIM.

“The recent global financial crisis has put information governance in the spotlight,” said Ted Friedman, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “Information governance is a priority of IT and business leaders as a result of various pressures, including regulatory compliance mandates and the urgent need for improved decision-making.”

MDM is one of the most notable information governance programs, and the MDM market continues to grow because it focuses on specific business drivers and business-led initiatives. Gartner predicts by 2016, 20 percent of CIOs in regulated industries will lose their jobs for failing to implement the discipline of information governance successfully.

BHP Billiton to stem corporate corruption | Bizcommunity.com

Mail & Guardian Online reports that global mining, oil and gas company BHP Billiton is working to stem corporate corruption in-house and among its local business associates – who received in early January an “anti-corruption expectations” notification from Billiton.

The document, which requires signed acknowledgement of receipt, summarises the company’s anti-corruption policy, which bans everything such as “gifts, travel, entertainment, meals or other things of value” that might improperly influence a government official to “facilitation payments”, defined as “small payments made to government officials to expedite routine actions”.

BHP Billiton SA spokesperson Johnny Dladla said the company’s code of conduct and internal policies prohibit corruption. “Specifically, our policies specify risk assessment and due diligence requirements for engaging business partners who interact with others on our behalf,” he said. Although the action is commendable, experts say that moves such as these by large multinationals are because of tougher international legislation, such as the United Kingdom’s Bribery Act, introduced last year, and The United States’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), introduced in the late 1970s, are being enforced more actively.

This white paper separates fact from fiction, reality from myth, and, in doing so, will aid senior IT executives as they make decisions around cloud computing. While dispelling cloud computing myths, we will answer tough questions: How hard is it to adopt a private or hybrid cloud? How difficult is it to maintain and secure a cloud? How will the cloud transform my business? Do I have the right skill sets in place? What are some of my cost considerations? HP and Intel are committing extensive resources to helping customers with all of their questions and concerns around cloud computing.
