Microsoft Says Motorola’s Android Phones Infringe Its Patents – Bloomberg

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), the world’s largest software maker, began arguing its U.S. trade case that Android- based smartphones made by Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. use technology derived from Microsoft inventions.

In a trial that began today before the International Trade Commission in Washington, Microsoft accused Motorola Mobility of infringing seven of its patents and requested a halt to imports of certain Motorola phones. The ITC has the power to stop imports of products that violate U.S. patent rights.

The case is the first smartphone dispute to be heard by the agency since Google Inc. (GOOG) said Aug. 15 it would buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion to obtain patents that could be used as a bulwark against a surge of lawsuits targeting handsets and tablet computers that use Google’s Android operating system.

“We have a responsibility to our employees, customers, partners and shareholders to safeguard our intellectual property,” David Howard, Microsoft’s corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for litigation, said in an e-mail. “Motorola is infringing our patents and we are confident that the ITC will rule in our favor.”

Microsoft Apologizes for Email Glitch | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

After a series of glitches causes a massive email backlog, Microsoft has posted a detailed explanation and apology for the problems with the cloud-based Microsoft Exchange subscription service.

As a result of the backlog, some messages were delayed as long as nine hours, while another separate issue with Outlook Web Access raised issues with Exchange ActiveSync devices.

“On Tuesday and today we experienced three separate service issues that impacted customers served from our Americas data center,” explained Dave Thompson, corporate vice president of Microsoft Online Services. “All of these issues have been resolved and the service is now running smoothly. These incidents were unique to BPOS and not related to Office 365 or any other Microsoft services.”

If you’re gleaning a defensive tone, it’s not without merit. Last week Office Live customers were having trouble accessing the cloud-based service. While Office Live is expected to stay online, Office 365 will replace Microsoft’s Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS)—the service affected today—as well as Office Live Small Business and Live@edu.

Microsoft Adds iPhone Version of OneNote | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Microsoft launched the “unsung hero” of Office, Microsoft OneNote, for the iPhone on Tuesday.

Like it does on the Windows desktop, the app serves as a general repository for notes, reminders, to-do lists, and other digital detritus that users still want to be able to access later. The OneNote app is free for a “limited time” on the Apple App Store.

As one might imagine, the app syncs with a user’s free Microsoft SkyDrive account, allowing a user to create a shopping list, for example, then access it while on the go. Conversely, a user might be able to take a picture of a particular object from his or her iPhone, then attach it to a reminder to look for more information while at home.

According to Microsoft, more than 78 million people have OneNote installed, and one of the biggest questions the company has received has been when Microsoft would release an iPhone app.

“We know people care more about what they do than where they do it. They expect technology to make that easier,” Takeshi Numoto, the corporate vice president in charge of Office, wrote in a blog post. “They want familiarity and for things to just work. As new pieces of technology – new browsers, mobile hardware, smart phones and social networks – become bigger parts of their lives, they expect familiar technology, like Office, to help them access their ideas wherever they are.”

The software requires an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or later. Users then need to sign into their SkyDrive account. From there, the bare-bones interface simply allows the user to type in a note; the user can create a list, tag the note as a to-do item, and use the camera. Unfortunately, however, there apparently is no way for a user to leave a voice memo, let alone transcribe it into text. Users can also add a title to the note.

Microsoft: virus-infected computers should be quarantined | Technology | guardian.co.uk

Virus-infected computers should be blocked from the internet and kept in quarantine until they are given a “health certificate”, a top Microsoft security researcher suggested on Thursday.

Under the proposed security regime, put forward by the technology giant’s trustworthy computing team, an individual’s internet connection would be “throttled” to prevent the virus spreading to other computers. But security experts today warned that cutting people off from the internet could be a drastic step too far – and that the question of who would issue and verify the “health certificate” was troubling.

Millions of computers around the world running versions of Microsoft’s Windows operating system are infected by viruses without their user’s knowledge and used to generate billions of spam emails and attacks against websites, such as that used against a British law company earlier this month.

The infected computers are often marshalled by virus writers into “botnets” which are hired out for criminal use. Microsoft, internet service providers, banks and web companies have fought long but so far unsuccessful battles against botnets. Earlier this year Microsoft took its fight to the US courts after a group of infected computers sent more than 650m spam emails to its Hotmail accounts. The spread of computer viruses has, however, continued unabated.

The new proposal, Microsoft claimed, is built on the lessons of public health. Scott Charney, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s trustworthy computing team, wrote on the company’s blog: “Just as when an individual who is not vaccinated puts others’ health at risk, computers that are not protected or have been compromised with a bot put others at risk and pose a greater threat to society.”

Microsoft kills Courier tablet project – BusinessWeek

Microsoft confirmed it has canceled further development and production on its tablet project, codenamed Courier, which industry watchers speculated could help drive down costs of Apple’s popular iPad.

“At any given time, across any of our business groups, there are new ideas being investigated, tested, and incubated. It’s in Microsoft’s DNA to continually develop and incubate new technologies to foster productivity and creativity,” said Frank Shaw, corporate vice president of communications at Microsoft, in a statement. “The ‘Courier’ project is an example of this type of effort and its technologies will be evaluated for use in future Microsoft offerings.”

According to published reports from Gizmodo, Microsoft stopped production its planned double-screen tablet that had some industry watchers excited about its potential to increase competition in the tablet market. Courier, along with the HP Slate running Windows 7, the Dell Streak running Google’s Android OS and Lenovo’s IdeaPad U1, had industry watchers projecting that competitive offerings would bring down the cost of Apple’s iPad.
