Data Mapping Services for Electronic Discovery & Information Governance

Quite often technology staff and legal teams do not have a clear picture of the data contained on corporate servers beyond gross volumes and which staff or teams have access to the environment.  Techicians from Global EDD Group are able to analyze custodian computers and network servers while they are online, capturing key data points with minimal impact to business operations.

This analysis enables Global EDD Group to compose detailed statistics and reports that provide valuable knowledge regarding the contents of each computer or server.  In turn, This knowledge enables legal teams to selectively prioritize specific data points, identify potential issues and exclude specific data types very early in the discovery process.  This service is also quite useful with large volumes of unstructured data that is stored offline on hard drives and NAS devices.

The following outlines the statistics, reports and charts/graphs that Global EDD Group is able to generate during the Data Mapping process:

Global EDD Group - Data Collection & Digital Investigation Services

Global EDD Group - Data Collection & Digital Investigation Services

Creating or maintaining a Data Collection and Digital Investigation team is a major investment for organizations of all sizes.  Beyond the initial cost of the specialized hardware and software required for this line of service is the ongoing labor cost for the trained specialists who undertake the technical tasks associated with each project.   While clients may demand data collection services in support of processing and hosting agreements, it often may not make good business sense to invest in a large or full time Data Collection and Digital Investigation team as it can be a burden on operating budgets.  As a valuable alternative, Global EDD Group provides Data Collection and Digital Investigation Services as outsourced subcontractor, enabling industry vendors to provide the services at a competitive price point without losing control of the client management or post-collection services.  Quite simply, the technicians from Global EDD Group provide services on your behalf under your direction via the Preferred Partner Program.

FCPA Map: Where the Bribes Are – Mintz Group

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, passed in 1977, has led to more than 200 cases covering activity in about 80 countries. On this map, the darker red that a country appears, the larger the total penalties assessed for FCPA violations in that country. Roll over a country to see the FCPA cases there (the bigger the box, the larger the penalty in that case). Click on each box for case details. Global EDD Group: Your Local E-Discovery Resource, Worldwide

It is not uncommon to read posts, tweets and emails within the litigation support industry with a firm, corporation or vendor urgently seeking “local” resources at a distant location, whether it be here in the United States or at points around the globe.  While sometimes it is simply a matter of practicality, more often than not it is a desperate attempt to satisfy a client who refuses to acknowledge the terms “travel” or “remote” as part of a polite conversation.  Why might this be?  Well, historically these terms have often resulted in unexpectedly large invoices due to high hourly fees and premium airfare requirements.

One should also note that there are a number of locations in the world where there simply is not enough local demand to support a legal technology business.  Many legal systems outside of the US and UK do not have discovery and disclosure requirements, thus there a few resources to support such services.  Not only can this be noted for global finance centers such as Shanghai, Zurich and Dubai, but many regions in the United States where there is not a demand for electronic discovery services.  Some scanning and reprographics shops have taken the initiative to invest in the appropriate software, but unfortunately may not have the in-house knowledge and experience to execute the requirements of a project successfully.  This leaves critical decisions for the corporation and firm involved in a case – blindly search for an unknown vendor with unproven skills or leverage a relationship with a specialist that has a range of direct experience and experience?  At what point does cost – or perceived cost – outweigh potential risks such as spoliation?

There are, however, a growing number of options to the historical norms within the industry.   Boutique companies such as Global EDD Group are bridging the gap between organizations and their growing national and international electronic discovery needs by leveraging proven experience, low operational expenses and an extensive network of resources to offer clients legal technology services around the globe at price points typically associated with local vendors.

Global EDD Group

Remote & Mobile Resources

Global Network

Technical Hubs:  Cleveland, Singapore

Resource Centers:  Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur,  London, New York, Paris, San Francisco,  Taipei, Tokyo, Washington DC

Mobile Technology Units

Global EDD Group leverages specialized mobile technology units (“MTUs”) that can deploy worldwide with short notice and provide a full range of self-contained electronic discovery services, including:

◊  Data Mapping
◊  Data Collection
◊  Digital Forensics
◊  Data Minimization
◊  Early Data Assessment
◊  Email Analytics & Conversion
◊  Key Term Analysis
◊  Offline Content Review
◊  TIFF/PDF Conversion

The MTUs provide an extremely portable and cost-effective alternative to the typical industry approach of “copy and ship” data to an offsite facility for downstream processing.  While this approach may be suitable for some projects, it can prove challenging to cases with cross-border privacy concerns, tight deadlines, trade secrets or lack of appropriate resources.  Global EDD Group has designed the MTU services to not only alleviate these challenges of shipping data, but to do so at competive price points often comparable to using a local vendor.

Typical Usage Scenarios:

◊  FCPA Investigation
◊  Due Dilgence Matters
◊  Cross-Border Litigation
◊  Remote Client Facilities (regional, national or international)
◊  Data Protection Act Jurisdictions
◊  Trade Secret Security Concerns

Remote Data Collection

Today’s 24/7/365 global economy often does not allow for server downtime to undertake typical forensic collections, nor do many court mandated deadlines allow enough time to collect data at geographically dispersed locations.

Our data collection teams are able to remotely capture live data – including  RAID disks, physical drives, logical volumes, and physical memory (32 & 64 bit Windows) – in a forensically sound manner via IP network connection.  We can connect to a target device, whether it is a server located downstairs in the corporate data center or a PC in a remote office halfway around the world, as long as there is connectivity within the corporate network.

Target environments supported include:

Windows: 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, & 7, 32 and 64bit, Physical memory only supported on 32bit and 64bit Windows

Apple OSX: OSX 10.3,10.4,10.5,10.6 Universal Binary, *FK only supports Intel Apple OSX

Linux: most Linux distributions build on Glibc 2.3.5 and higher, Android on ARM, and Embedded Linux

Solaris: Solaris 8, 9, & 10 on SPARC and OpenSolaris on Intel

IBM AIX: AIX 5.1,5.2,5.3,6.1 on the Power processor

HPUX: HP_UX11iv2,11iv3 on the Itanium processor

FreeBSD: AIX 7 on the Intel/i386 processor

SCO: SCO OpenServer 6 and Unixware 7 on the Intel/i386 processor

E-Discovery At Your Office, Not Ours – Mobile Technology Units from Global EDD Group

Today’s electronic discovery industry has been designed around powerful data centers that provide robust processing and hosting capabilities from a centralized location.   While these centers most certainly provide valuable performance and economic advantages,  it is often not possible to simply ship data to the data centers due to cross-border privacy concerns, tight deadlines, trade secrets or lack of budget-friendly resources.

Realizing these concerns, Global EDD Group has developed specialized mobile technology units (“MTU”) that can deploy worldwide with short notice and provide a full range of self-contained electronic discovery services, including:

◊  Data Mapping
◊  Data Collection
◊  Digital Forensics
◊  Data Minimization
◊  Early Data Assessment

Reduce E-Discovery Costs with Data Minimization Services from Global EDD Group

New Services Enables 30 – 50 Percent Reduction of Data Volumes and Processing Fees

Data Collection projects undertaken by teams of corporate, legal and consultant staff often results in large volumes of data that is not relevent to a given case, can not easily be processed (databases, music, video) or is a known file from the host operating system.  While it is often beneficial to preserve this data for future reference, it can become incredibly costly and burdensome to manage, process or review these files during a case.Rather than simply forward these files downstream for expensive processing and eventual exclusion, Global EDD Group will apply an automated filtering system that intelligently excludes files based on type, owner, date, source and hash value and creates a report for future reference.  The culled subset of data is often 30 to 50 percent smaller and provides an immediately savings to the end client via reduced processing, hosting and review costs.

Data Minimization Features:

◊  DeDuplicate
◊  DeNIST
◊  Date Range Filter
◊  File Type Filter
◊  Large File Filter
◊  Available at collection point, at our processing centers or your office
