Attack on Comodo Sheds Light on Internet Security Holes – NYTimes.com

The Comodo Group, an Internet security company, has been attacked in the last month by a talkative and professed patriotic Iranian hacker who infiltrated several of the company’s partners and used them to threaten the security of myriad big-name Web sites.

But the case is a problem for not only Comodo, which initially believed the attack was the work of the Iranian government. It has also cast a spotlight on the global system that supposedly secures communications and commerce on the Web.

The encryption used by many Web sites to prevent eavesdropping on their interactions with visitors is not very secure. This technology is in use when Web addresses start with “https” (in which “s” stands for secure) and a closed lock icon appears on Web browsers. These sites rely on third-party organizations, like Comodo, to provide “certificates” that guarantee sites’ authenticity to Web browsers.

But many security experts say the problems start with the proliferation of organizations permitted to issue certificates. Browser makers like Microsoft, Mozilla, Google and Apple have authorized a large and growing number of entities around the world — both private companies and government bodies — to create them. Many private “certificate authorities” have, in turn, worked with resellers and deputized other unknown companies to issue certificates in a “chain of trust” that now involves many hundreds of players, any of which may in fact be a weak link.

Job market reflects importance of eDiscovery preparedness

Recognizing the importance and the increasing challenges of eDiscovery, companies will focus on hiring professionals that specialize in such litigation technology, according to a recent report from the Cowen Group, 2010 Salary Study.

The report predicts that more than 200 eDiscovery and other litigation technology professionals will be hired during the first six months of 2011. The group also expects this hiring boom to accelerate the competitiveness of landing an eDiscovery support position.

The boom is fueled by the increase in eDiscovery cases and growing complexity of responding to litigation.

“New litigation and resumed work on previously stalled litigation is driving the next wave of litigation support and eDiscovery hiring,” said David Cowen, president and founder of the Cowen Group.

According to a recent Radacati Group study (Email Statistics Report, 2009-2013), business users in 2009 received an average of 20 megabytes (MB) of email per day – and that figure is predicted to reach 31 MB per day by 2013. What this means is, if you take that 2009 figure – 20 MB per day – and multiply it by 260 business days, you end up with a figure of 5.2 gigabytes (GB) of email per user per year. But it doesn’t stop there. If your organization has 1,000 employees, this figure is really 5.2 terabytes of email per year!

Radacati also found that users sent and received an average of 167 emails per day. Again, at 260 business days per year, this equates to over 43,000 messages per user per year – all of which you’ll have to search through in legal discovery, without proper email management.

Clearly, email is not trivial – or free. On the contrary, it is a vital business function involving vital business documents that should be addressed in a strategic, professional manner just as you would any other essential business practice. A recent AIIM study on email management (Email Management – The good, the bad and the ugly), shows that email is clearly not receiving the attention from the C-suite that it should.
