Sony unveils thinnest 10.1-inch tablet ever—the Xperia Tablet Z | Ars Technica

Sony is unveiling a new Android tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Monday. The company claims the tablet is not only the “world’s thinnest 10.1-inch tablet” at 6.9 millimeters, but it’s apparently waterproof in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes.

Inside, the Xperia Tablet Z has a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 1920×1200 display running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. (Sony has gone scouts-honor that the tablet will be updated to 4.2 “after launch.”) The tablet weighs 495 grams (1.05 pounds), and it has an 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front camera, plus 16GB/32GB storage configurations with a microSD slot that can take up to a 64GB card.

The tablet also contains an IR blaster that works with a special version of an app Sony has created called TV SideView. TV SideView integrates with a user’s cable provider and allows users to browse the program guide as well as currently airing content.

Google announces new Nexus tablets, smartphone | CNET News (Casey Newton)

Google announced lots of new hardware today via blog post, after an event in New York was canceled in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy. The big items:

  • The Nexus 4 smartphone, developed with LG. It features a quad-core processor, a 4.2-inch display, and a wireless charging feature that lets you power the phone by setting it down on a charging service. It runs Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and a feature called Photo Sphere for creating 360-degree panoramas. The phone goes on sale Nov. 13 for $299.
  • The Nexus 7 now comes in new Wi-Fi models that are 16GB (for $199) and 32GB (for $249). Google also is making a version available with an HSPA+ cellular connection — 32GB for $299. It’s on sale Nov. 13.
  • The Nexus 10 tablet, developed with Samsung, offers what Google calls the highest-resolution screen in the tablet marketplace at 300 pixels per square inch. That 2560 by 1600 pixel display will still get nine hours of video playback, Google says. And it has an account-switching feature that lets multiple users share the tablet more easily. The 16GB model goes for for $399; the 32GB model costs for $499. It’s available Nov. 14.

Google Nexus 10 tablet to have higher-res display than iPad | ZDNet (Ben Woods)

Google is gearing up to launch a 10.1-inch tablet that will be manufactured by Samsung, according to an analyst.

The Nexus tablet will not be a budget affair like the Nexus 7, and will instead be a Samsung-branded premium product, NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim told ZDNet’s sister site CNET News.

“It’s going to be a high-end device,” Shim said, quoted in the story published on Monday. “They’ll partner with Samsung and co-brand it with Samsung.”

The Nexus device will have a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, which is a PPI (pixels per inch) of around 299, surpassing the iPad’s 264 PPI, Shim said. A higher number of pixels per inch results in a better image on screen.

Western Digital Debuts 2.5-inch Hybrid Hard Drive – eWeek.com (Nathan Eddy)

WD’s hybrid hard drive combines MLC NAND flash storage with magnetic disks, along with tiered data technology.

Western Digital subsidiary and storage specialist WD unveiled what it claims to be the world’s thinnest 2.5-inch hybrid hard drive, designed to provide high-capacity storage while featuring instant-on and application performance similar to today’s client solid state drives (SSDs). The company noted it is sampling the 5mm-thin hard disk drive and will showcase the technology at an investor’s conference later this week.

The technology pairs multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash storage for SSD-like data throughput and instant-on responsiveness with magnetic disks for high-capacity storage. The drives also use data tiering, whereby data accessed most frequently (known as “hot” data) is managed using NAND flash for fast response times, “cold” data– data accessed less often–resides on the robust magnetic disks.

Samsung preparing massive 11.8-inch tablet with Retina Display-like resolution | ZDNet (Sean Portnoy)

The documents released for the Apple vs. Samsung trial have been a treasure trove for gadget bloggers, showing off Apple’s early prototypes of the iPhone and iPad, amongst other findings. The Verge has also unearthed an intriguing skeleton in Samsung’s closet: plans for a huge 11.8-inch tablet with Retina Display-like resolution.

While this is not the first time news of a large Samsung tablet has surfaced — BGR reported a rumor about a similar slate, though it predicted a February 2012 release date — we now have official confirmation (albeit indirectly) from the company itself.

Known as P10, the tablet would possess a pixel density of 256ppi with a resolution of 2,560×1,600. It would also come with LTE connectivity. But it would be one of the biggest slates available — Toshiba introduced the 13-inch Excite 13 earlier this year — which could hinder its commercial possibilities.

Though Apple is hyping the Retina Display feature for its latest iPad and special edition of MacBook Pro, the basic concept of pushing more pixels into fewer inches isn’t proprietary, so it should come as no surprise that its competitors will join in with similar ultra-high-resolution displays of their own. What is a bit surprising is that Samsung would attempt it in a tablet that’s 2 inches bigger than the iPad’s 9.7-inch form factor.
