Testing shows iPhone 4S A5 GPU clocked at 800MHz, 73% faster than iPhone 4 | AppleInsider

New Geekbench scores of the forthcoming iPhone 4S show that its custom-built A5 CPU is clocked at 800MHz, while the dual-core processor gives it a 73 percent performance boost than the iPhone 4.

The new figures from AnandTech show the iPhone 4S with an overall Geekbench score of 623, easily besting the 800MHz A4 CPU found in the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S processor is clocked slower than the 1GHz A5 CPu found in the iPad 2, which earned a score of 751.

And in terms of its graphics processing capabilities, the iPhone 4S lived up to claims of being seven times faster than the iPhone 4. In one test, the iPhone 4S earned a score of 73.1 while the iPhone 4 took 11.2, and in another the iPhone 4S clocked a score of 122.7, compared to 15.3 for the iPhone 4.

Giz Explains: What’s So Smart About the iPhone 4S’s Antenna?

With the iPhone 4S, Apple says it will deliver an iPhone that works anywhere in the world, and with fantastic reception.

How did they do it? One word: antennas.

Apple’s marketing guru Phil Schiller said the iPhone 4S “intelligently switches between two antennas to receive and send.” Brilliant! But vague. How exactly does a smart antenna act?

When you have a small, thin device that needs to receive and send multiple types of signals without interfering with one another, you need to get creative. As we learned from the iPhone 4 “antennagate,” even the best engineers and designers can’t always come up with perfect antenna scheme.

But antenna gurus have plenty of tricks up their sleeves, it’s just a matter of finding the best recipe—and sometimes inventing a spanking new technology.

“What [Apple] seemed to allude to was a switching or selective processing technique: taking the better signal between two antennas and using it,” said Aaron Vronko, co-founder of Rapid Repair, in Portage, Michigan.

That’s one step in the right direction, but there are many other antenna hurdles to clear. On a cell phone, antennas have to be placed close together simply because cell phones are little. And antennas close together tend to interfere with each other. One way phone makers can address that is by placing antennas at opposite ends of the phone, a technique called spatial diversity.

Verizon To Put Warning Stickers On All Smartphones With Location Awareness | Touch Reviews

As part of the fallout of the current iPhone 4 location data fiasco it appears Verizon will now put warning stickers on its location-aware smartphones, reports Electronista.

In a letter in response to Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey’s call for information on the affair, Verizon SVP of Federal Government Relations Peter B. Davidson explains that Verizon will continue to try to educate its customers and to try to protect them from any potential pitfalls of smartphone ownership when it comes to their location.

In order to warn its customers, Verizon will soon begin attaching stickers to smartphone screens, warning that the handset has the ability to detect its (and thus the owner’s) location and transmit it to a receiving party. Whether this information will ever be read, let alone headed remains to be seen but Verizon is at least taking steps to protect its customers, as well as itself!

Apple IPhone Software Loses Speed Test to Google’s Android – Bloomberg

Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone worked slower loading websites 84 percent of the time in a test than phones using Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system, according to a Canadian software company.

The iPhone 4 was pitted against Google’s Nexus S smartphone over the same Wi-Fi connection, so any differences in mobile- carrier speeds wouldn’t affect the outcome, Ottawa-based Blaze Software Inc. said today in releasing the research. The Android phone operated 52 percent faster on average after more than 45,000 page loads from 1,000 websites, Blaze said.

Users don’t always notice the speed gap because websites are sometimes tailored to mobile phones, Blaze said. The difference will become more obvious as users demand richer experiences and move to tablet computers with larger screens, said Guy Podjarny, chief technology officer of Blaze, whose business is helping companies increase website download times.

“It’s not that Apple doesn’t care about speed, but Google is fanatical about it,” Podjarny said in an interview yesterday.

AppleInsider | Verizon will offer only $30 unlimited data plan for iPhone 4 users

A leaked memo from Verizon shows that the carrier will no longer offer its entry-level capped data plan smartphones, requiring new iPhone 4 customers to buy the $30-per-month unlimited offering.

The new pricing, leaked to Engadget, shows that Verizon intends to cease its $15-per-month 150MB data plan. Buyers of new 3G smartphones will be required to pay $29.99 per month for unlimited data allowance.

The change is reportedly set to come as Verizon prepares to offer a CDMA variant of the iPhone 4 to its customers on Feb. 10.
