Sony unveils thinnest 10.1-inch tablet ever—the Xperia Tablet Z | Ars Technica

Sony is unveiling a new Android tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Monday. The company claims the tablet is not only the “world’s thinnest 10.1-inch tablet” at 6.9 millimeters, but it’s apparently waterproof in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes.

Inside, the Xperia Tablet Z has a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 1920×1200 display running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. (Sony has gone scouts-honor that the tablet will be updated to 4.2 “after launch.”) The tablet weighs 495 grams (1.05 pounds), and it has an 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front camera, plus 16GB/32GB storage configurations with a microSD slot that can take up to a 64GB card.

The tablet also contains an IR blaster that works with a special version of an app Sony has created called TV SideView. TV SideView integrates with a user’s cable provider and allows users to browse the program guide as well as currently airing content.

Quick updates on the Singapore e-litigation scene | Litigation Edge (Serena Lim)

The Singapore litigation and court industry brace themselves for e-litigation, a new court e-filing system, which will be rolled out in phases,  come 2 January 2014.  The current EFS system which has served us well and made the Singapore Courts an international leader in court technology, will be slowly replaced and phased out in 2014. Wizards and webforms replace our relatively clunky 10-year old grand dame which has served us well and featured so pervasively in the work lives of litigation support staff in Singapore. I am also glad to see the demise of the EFS smartcard and its replacement with the unique Singpass e-identity which Singaporeans use for our other government filings, from tax to CPF.  This will make e-filing more portable. Thousands have been trained on the new system in anticipation of the launch. Our sister company, Bizibody Technology is a member of the consortium lead by Crimson Logic, who undertook the development of the e-litigation system. We wish the Courts, SAL, our friends at Crimson Logic and everyone that has been involved in this landmark project, a very smooth take-off.

The international “who’s who” in the ediscovery world, including globetrotting eDiscovery commentator Chris Dale of the e-Disclosure Information Project, Vince Neicho from Allen & Overy, took the stage at the Singapore eDiscovery Asia 2012 event on 21st and 22nd November 2012. As always, Chris was on cue with great snippet insights, made during speaker introductions. On a sleepy afternoon, Edmund Kronenburg from Braddell Brothers spiced up one of the sessions with a challenge to Courts to push the envelope further and faster, and for large law firms to show the lead more than they currently have.

The Litigation Edge team has been working very hard in preparing its submission to the Call for Collaboration for an eDiscovery SaaS, issued by the Singapore Academy of Law on 25 June 2012. The SAL received 5 submissions and are currently in the process of evaluating the same. The CFC was crafted with much industry feedback and calls for a system with some unique Singapore eDiscovery features, including an evidence management module, a holistic program for business transformation and government grants for technology adopters. This will be another landmark in Singapore’s legal technology history.

Every week, we hear of yet another prominent international law firm establishing an office in Singapore. The legal scene in Singapore will become even more competitive, more cosmopolitan and more dynamic. We have a progressive and talented bench , a minister of law that acts decisively and boldly, and very active legislators.  Lots happening in the legal scene here, no time for complacency, it is becoming difficult even for lawyers to keep up.

In Autonomy Debacle, HP Turns to Morgan Lewis | The Recorder (Vanessa Blum)

Leslie Caldwell knows a thing or two about accounting fraud, having been plucked from her post as criminal chief in the San Francisco U.S. attorney’s office in 2002 to head the Justice Department’s special Enron Task Force.

And Caldwell’s firm, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, has been a go-to firm for Palo Alto-based Hewlett-Packard Co. The company’s current and former general counsel both hailed from Morgan Lewis, which receives a steady flow of HP’s litigation and transactional work.

So it’s natural the company turned to Caldwell and to Morgan Lewis to deal with the fallout from its $11 billion acquisition of Autonomy, the British software company HP now accuses of cooking its books leading to devastating losses.

But in 2011 during the ill-fated acquisition of Autonomy, Morgan Lewis did not represent HP, a valuable and long-time client. Instead, Morgan Lewis served as an adviser to Autonomy, helping secure approval of the deal from antitrust regulators.

That could raise a sticky set of conflicts for HP and Morgan Lewis as the company prepares to launch and defend an onslaught of legal actions related to HP’s recent announcement it would write down $8.8 billion related to the problem-plagued deal.

What is IPv6, and why does it matter? – The Washington Post (Hayley Tsukayama)

Wednesday marks the launch of a new era for the Internet — the switch to IPv6.

Great, you say. What does that mean?

In really simple terms, it means that the Internet is expanding its address directory. Right now, there are 4.3 billion IP (internet protocol) addresses on the Internet, meaning that there’s a unique address for 4.3 billion devices to connect to the Web. With the launch of IPv6, which assigns addresses in a new way, that number can grow — to 340 trillion, trillion trillion.

And believe it or not, we need the room.

In a video from Google, Internet pioneer and Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist Vint Cerf, points out that there are already enough mobile devices in the world to exhaust the addresses for the current system, IPv4. And device growth is moving much faster than population growth, according to a study from Ericsson Wednesday that projects that mobile device subscriptions will outnumber the world’s population within five years — 9 billion mobile subscriptions for 7.4 billion people.

Launch partners include Akamai, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T, Cisco, Facebook, Microsoft Bing, Yahoo and, of course, Google.
