Apple Hit by Hackers Who Struck Facebook – WSJ.com (JESSICA E. LESSIN And GEOFFREY A. FOWLER)

Apple Inc. AAPL -0.04% said Tuesday that some of its employees Mac computers were attacked by hackers, a rare admission for a company that has long touted its security over PCs running Windows software.

Apple said a “small number” of computers became infected after employees visited a website for software developers that transmitted the malicious computer code.

Apple said Tuesday it would release a software update to protect Mac users, and is working with law enforcement to find the source of the so-called malware.

The disclosure is unusual for Apple, which generally doesnt detail particular attacks. In the past, the company has generally issued notices on its support page of possible vulnerabilities and issued software updates to fix them.

My Passport Edge: A Half Terabyte of Storage Not Much Bigger Than a Deck of Cards | Gizmodo.com (Andrew Liszewski)

If your MP3 collection has maxed out your ultrabook’s SSD right out of the box, Western Digital’s got a pair of new slim external drives designed to complement your laptop’s sleek profile—whether you’re a Windows or OS X user.

Available in Mac and PC specific models, the drives pack 500 gigabytes of storage and a USB 3.0 connection so transferring your media doesn’t take all day. The Mac version features a matching aluminum housing so it will look right at home next to your MacBook, and support for Time Machine for $119. And even though PC users will have to settle for a pattern-adorned plastic housing and Western Digital’s own backup software, they also get a slightly cheaper price tag at $109. Maybe there is something to those ‘Apple Tax’ rumors.

Apple upgrade provides anti-virus protection | Sydney Morning Herald (Chris Gardner)

Apple has finally acknowledged its desktop computers are susceptible to viruses and malicious software.

The Cupertino, California, company behind the Apple Mac, iPod, iPhone and iPad has included anti-virus and malware software called Gatekeeper in its new OS X Mountain Lion operating system, released last week.

“Some apps downloaded and installed from the internet could adversely affect your Mac,” Apple’s website said. “Gatekeeper helps protect your Mac from such apps.

“Gatekeeper is a new feature in Mountain Lion that builds on OS X’s existing malware checks to help protect your Mac from malware and misbehaving apps.

Apple adds encryption contextual menu options to Mountain Lion | CNET Reviews (Topher Kessler)

A new feature that Apple has included in Mountain Lion offers a convenient way to encrypt secondary volumes on your Mac, making data security far more convenient.

Recently discovered by Mac OS X Hints contributor “kirkmc,” if you right-click a nonboot volume in the Finder, the contextual menu that appears now contains an option to encrypt the disk. Selecting this will bring up a window requesting that you supply a password and a password hint for the drive, and upon doing this, the system will wait a short while (the length of which depends on the amount of data on the volume), followed by quickly unmounting and remounting the volume as an encrypted storage location.

This encryption option uses Apple’s CoreStorage volume management system, which is the technology behind its second-generation FileVault 2 that was introduced in OS X 10.7 Lion. This technology manages logical volumes underneath the OS, so when you encrypt a volume, the encryption can be performed in the background without any special steps needing to be taken with Disk Utility or other programs.

The encryption of secondary hard drives was possible before Mountain Lion, but this new feature in the OS makes it effortless to manage.
