FCC Moves to Ease Wi-Fi Congestion, Allow Wireless Signal Boosters | PCMag.com (Chloe Albanesius)

The Federal Communications Commission today officially proposed freeing up 195 MHz of spectrum in order to ease congestion and boost speeds on Wi-Fi networks.

Separately, the FCC also unveiled new rules for signal boosters, which amplify signals between wireless devices and wireless networks.

The Wi-Fi proposal calls for up to 195 MHz of additional spectrum in the 5 GHz band, a 35 percent boost. At this point, unlicensed wireless devices share 555 MHz in that band.

“This additional spectrum will increase speeds and alleviate Wi-Fi congestion at major hubs, such as airports, convention centers and large conference gatherings,” FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement. “In addition, this would also increase speed and capacity for Wi-Fi in the home where multiple users and devices are often on the network at the same time.”

Google Dropping Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync: What Do You Do? | PCMag.com (David Murphy)

Hello, platform wars!

Google has officially announced that it’s removing support for Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync protocol (Google Sync) as of January 30, 2013. Those currently using Google Sync to connect their mobile devices to their Gmail will remain unaffected, but new users will not be given the option to use Google Sync.

The company is suggesting that those looking to synchronize their non-Android devices up to their Google accounts use a combination of CalDAV, CardDAV, and IMAP for Google Calendar, Contacts, and Gmail respectively.

So what does that mean for mobile users? In short, here comes the fun.

The situation isn’t quite so dire for those sporting one of Apple’s iPhones, as the company natively supports both CalDAV and CardDAV for data synchronization. Users will no longer be able to “Add” their Gmail accounts, Calendars, and Contacts via Microsoft Exchange – which basically means that iPhone users will be stuck having to use a non-push-friendly IMAP connection to synchronize their Gmail to the iPhone’s Mail app. Unless, of course, they just download Google’s Gmail app, which is the more likely (and preferred) solution for those looking to receive push notifications from one’s Gmail account.

Google Adds Siri-Like Voice Search to iOS App | PCMag.com (Chloe Albanesius)

Google this week unveiled a revamped search app for iOS that adds a Siri-like voice-recognition service.

The search giant said the app update brings its “most advanced voice search” to iOS. When opening the free Google Search app on your iOS device, you will be greeted with a “Try our new voice search” message above a microphone icon on the main page. Tap that microphone, and speak into the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch as if you were talking to Siri.

Words will appear on the screen as you speak, and the answer will appear below as any other search query might show up. “If it’s short and quick, like the status and departure time of your flight—Google tells you the answer aloud,” the company said in a blog post.

Apple, Swiss Railway Ink Licensing Deal Over Clock Icon | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Apple has inked a deal with the the Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) to license the use of the railway’s iconic clock on iOS devices.

Financial terms of the agreement were not released, but SBB said Apple signed a deal that will allow it to use the clock icon on the iPhone and iPad.

In the wake of the Sept. 19 iOS 6 launch, the SBB claimed in an interview with the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper that the new clock icon within iOS 6 on the iPad (left) violated the railway’s clock trademark.

The clock design used by SBB (below) was crafted in 1944 by Hans Hilfiker, and the trademark is now owned by the Swiss Federal Railway. SBB licenses the design to companies like Mondaine, but told Tages-Anzeiger that Apple had not secured such a license.

BlackBerry Balance isn’t a magic pill that will ensure that Research in Motion’s effort to recapture enterprise business succeeds. But the new dual-profile capability that’s built into RIM’s next-generation BlackBerry 10 operating system could be a very attractive deal sweetener for CIOs who are trying to cope with the “bring your own device” trend in the workplace.

RIM is touting BB10, a flashy new smartphone platform that has been delayed until the first quarter of next year, as the engine that will bring the struggling company back from the abyss. At this week’s BlackBerry Jam developers conference, RIM executives have been talking up the more consumer-friendly features in BB10. That includes Peek, which offers abbreviated updates to a user’s social networks without the need to open up a Facebook or Twitter app, the addition of music and movies to BlackBerry App World, the “Flow” design of the OS that “frees” us from the “tyranny of the app grid,” and so forth.
