The ancient art of printing gets a game changer | CES 2011 Live Coverage News – Betanews

Memjet, the printer design company headed by former Qualcomm COO Len Lauer, made its first major partnership announcements at CES 2011 yesterday, and its staggeringly fast inkjet printers will be brought to market by Lenovo in China, WEP in India, and Kpowerscience in Taiwan. North America and Europe are sure to follow.

Why should you care about Memjet? Because most of the big announcements coming from printer companies in recent years have revolved around advances in printer communication and broadened functionality. It isn’t often that a disruptive technology comes along and results in a different kind of printer.

That’s what Memjet is showing at CES, an inkjet printer that is capable of between 60 and 70 pages per minute because of its unique printhead design.

Just for the sake of comparison, HP’s high-end OfficeJet Pro printers max out at 36 pages per minute, and the machines utilize a print head that slides back and forth to get the ink on the page. Memjet has a single printhead that is the width of the paper tray, that utilizes more than 70,000 color jets to ink a page.

Canon promises keyword-based document scanning and printing security system | IT PRO

Canon has demonstrated Uniflow 5, the latest version of its document management system that can prevent users from printing or copying documents containing specific words thanks to a clever keyboard-based security system.

Uniflow is a long-standing Canon document managing system that allows printers, scanners, copiers and multifunction devices to be managed centrally. This allows a record to be kept of how many documents have been printed etc and by whom for billing purposes. This is essential for professions that bill clients by the hour or by the amount of work done, such as lawyers and architects. The system requires both a Uniflow server on your network as well as Uniflow-enabled Canon imaging devices.

The latest version of Uniflow has a clever keyword-based security system. Once configured by an administrator, the system can prevent a user from attempting to print, scan, copy or fax a document containing a prohibited keyword, such as a client name or project codename.

The server will email the administrator a PDF copy of the document in question if a user attempts to do so. The system can optionally inform the user by email that their attempt has been blocked, but without identifying the keyword in question, maintaining the security of the system.

Dell adds document management features to printers | ITworld

Dell is embedding document management features in multifunction printers as it tries to establish a foothold in the managed print services market, the company said Thursday.

The embedded custom software is in multifunction printers for specific vertical markets like education, legal and health care. Such embedded software expands the functionality of MFPs and automates printing and scanning tasks, said Orlando Lacayo, product manager at Dell’s printing and imaging division. MFPs will be capable of scanning documents directly into forms or rerouting scanned documents to the right folders.

“As customers consolidate their printing resources and optimize their document workflow processes, it becomes very important to have software and integration tools to allow organizations … become more efficient,” Lacayo said.

For example, Dell’s Healthcare Print Station printers will scan documents and place the scanned data inside electronic medical records by just pressing one button. Based on the form layout, nurses can scan prescriptions, which would go directly to the pharmacy. The printers could help reduce medical errors and improve patient care, Lacayo said.

The Dell Classroom Print Station and Legal Print Station can scan documents directly to a network folder without additional instructions. The classroom printing product will also be capable of instantly grading tests and reporting the results in the right document. However, a server with Windows and additional software will be required to carry out the grading, a Dell spokeswoman said.

The applications are developed in Java and embedded directly into the MFPs.

How to Print from Your iPad | PCMag.com

The iPad is almost a laptop computer. After all, you can write documents in Pages, and draw beautiful pictures in Sketchbook Pro. But when you need to print them out, your options get pretty slim.

Apple's official answer for iPad printing is to sync your documents back to your Mac or PC and print from there. That works, of course. But that isn't iPad printing. It’s Mac/PC printing. Fortunately, third parties have written apps to kinda, sorta, let you print from your iPad. We tried a bunch of them with a range of printers from Epson, HP, Canon and Lexmark.

iPad printing apps claim to do a lot, but in our testing, many of them simply didn’t work. There’s definitely still room for a brilliant third-party app which can print to a range of Wi-Fi printers, because we couldn’t find one. The best we could find was Air Sharing HD, an app that reliably prints to printers shared by Macs on the same Wi-Fi network as your iPad, but even that had some formatting oddities.

There are three basic types of iPad printing apps. The first, supposedly, print directly to Wi-Fi-enabled printers. The second look out on your Wi-Fi network for Macs sharing printers, and can print to the shared printers without any intervention from the Mac’s user. This is a decent solution if you go somewhere with Macs and printers. The third type requires you to run a server in the background on a Mac or PC every time you want to print something. I consider that an unforgivable kludge; at that point, you might as well just sync your iPad.
