HTC Sues Apple Using Google Patents Bought Last Week as Battle Escalates – Bloomberg

HTC Corp. (2498), Asia’s second-biggest smartphone maker, is using nine patents bought from Google Inc. (GOOG) last week to pursue new infringement claims against Apple Inc.

Google had taken ownership of the patents less than a year ago, with four of the patents originating from Motorola Inc., three from Openwave Systems Inc. and two from Palm Inc., according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records. Jim Prosser, a spokesman for Mountain View, California-based Google, wouldn’t discuss reasons for the nine transfers to HTC.

HTC now has more ammunition in its fight to fend off multiple patent-infringement claims lodged by Apple that contend phones running Google’s Android operating system copy the iPhone. Google’s involvement in aiding HTC represents a new front in an industrywide dispute over smartphone technology that has also ensnared Android customers Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., Barnes & Noble Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.

UPDATE: Acer Unveils Line Of Tablets To Enter Rapidly Growing Market – WSJ.com

Acer Inc. (ACEIY, 2353.TW) unveiled its first line of tablet personal computers Tuesday as the PC giant looks to expand into the rapidly growing market.

The company plans to release three tablets early next year, with screens from 7 inches to 10.1 inches. The first 10.1-inch tablet, based on the Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Windows platform, will be released in February. The company will also release two tablets using Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android platform in April, one 7 inch and one 10.1 inch.

In addition, Acer will introduce a new 4.8-inch smartphone running on Android and a new dual, 14-inch touchscreen PC it dubbed the Iconia Touchbook. Iconia closes like a notebook but opens to reveal a second touchscreen in place of a keyboard.

With close to 19 million tablets sold worldwide this year, and 54.8 million units expected to be sold in 2011, the company said the market is poised for entry.

President and Chief Executive Gianfranco Lanci said at the tablet launch event in New York that people are moving from creating content to consuming content, and they need a variety of devices for the different needs. He said there likely will be a variety of form factors and devices in the future.

Acer is the latest PC maker to join the tablet PC bandwagon after Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPad attracted strong consumer demand. Many device makers including BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM, RIM.T), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and Samsung Electronics Co. (SSNHY, 005930.SE), have recently announced plans to introduce tablets to compete with Apple’s wildly popular product.

For two years, Acer has relied on netbooks–tiny, stripped-down laptops–to propel growth. The company’s products, especially its Aspire One, proved so popular, Acer vaulted over Dell Inc. (DELL) to become the world’s second-largest computer maker by computer shipments behind Hewlett-Packard.

Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, said it will begin selling a tablet computer in North America in the first quarter for “under” $500 as it takes on Apple Inc.’s iPad.

“The product will be very competitively priced,” Co-Chief Executive Officer Jim Balsillie said in an interview in Seoul today, declining to be more specific. Sales of the BlackBerry Playbook, unveiled in September, will expand globally from the second quarter, he said. The iPad starts at $499.

RIM, Hewlett-Packard Co., Samsung Electronics Co. and Motorola Inc. are seeking to build tablet computers after the introduction of the iPad triggered demand for devices that can fill the gap between smartphones and laptops. Apple sold 3 million iPads in the first 80 days after the device’s April debut, eclipsing sales of its iPod music player.

Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM is trying to differentiate itself from Apple and other tablet makers by stressing the ability of its PlayBook tablet to handle Adobe Systems Inc.’s Flash technology that underpins much of the video content on the Internet. The iPad doesn’t run Flash video or animation.

Microsoft Licenses Patents Created by Palm – WSJ.com

In another sign of the ferment over intellectual property in the mobile market, Microsoft Corp. has licensed dozens of patents related to smartphones, most of which originated from the creator of the software behind the pioneering Palm Treo devices.

The deal will allow Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., to avoid at least some of the litigation that has been targeted at big rivals in the smartphone market recently. Microsoft licensed the patents—74 of them in all—for undisclosed terms from Acacia Research Corp. and Access Co. Ltd., a Japanese company that acquired PalmSource, the firm behind the Palm operating system, in 2005.

Some of the same patents are involved in a pendinglawsuit Acacia filed in March in federal court in Tyler, Texas, against Apple Inc., Blackberry-maker Research In Motion Ltd., Samsung Electronics Co., Motorola Inc. and other smartphone makers. The suit, which didn’t name Microsoft, alleged the defendants infringe on patents covering functions like email synchronization and providing phone capabilities from personal computer devices
