Verizon Wireless to offer $15 data promotion | Reuters

Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile operator, will start offering a lower priced mobile data service with limited downloads on October 28, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The move by the venture of Verizon Communications (VZ.N) and Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L) follows smaller rival AT&T Inc’s (T.N) elimination of unlimited data service plans earlier this year, when AT&T also introduced a choice of lower-priced plans with limited downloads of items such as email or games.

Verizon Wireless has said recently it would move to tiered pricing but the company declined to comment on Tuesday.

AFP: Verizon to sell iPad tablet computers

US telecom titan Verizon Wireless will begin selling iPads this month in a sign that Apple is getting closer to ending its exclusive deal with AT&T regarding service for the firm’s mobile gadgets.

Models of Apple’s coveted tablet computers featuring Wi-Fi connections to the Internet, and not iPads with built-in broadband network capabilities, will be sold at Verizon shops nationwide starting October 28.

The same day, AT&T shops will begin selling the three iPad models featuring 3G connectivity along with Wi-Fi capabilities.

“We can’t wait to showcase the amazing features of iPad Wi-Fi + 3G in our stores across the country,” said AT&T president of emerging devices Glenn Lurie.

Verizon said it will offer “bundles” that pair iPads with Mobile Hotspot devices that link to the Internet using the carrier’s 3G wireless network.

“This is the perfect pairing for holiday travels,” said Verizon chief operating officer John Stratton, allowing iPad users to “easily connect on the go wherever they are.”

The announcement came amid persistent reports that an iPhone version synched to the Verizon network is in the works.

Such a release would end an exclusive US partnership that AT&T has had with Apple since the first iPhone model was released in 2007.

Apple Making Verizon-Ready iPhone by Year End – WSJ.com

AT&T Inc. is about to lose its lock on the iPhone.

Apple Inc. is making a version of its iPhone that Verizon Wireless will sell early next year, according to people familiar with the matter, ending an exclusive deal with AT&T and sharpening the competition with Google Inc.-based phones.

The iPhone is finally coming to the Verizon wireless network as Apple gears up to produce a CDMA version of its popular smartphone that will be available in the first quarter of next year. Marcelo Prince and Julia Angwin discuss.

While Apple is on track to sell 40 million iPhones across the globe this year, the touchscreen handset is facing pressure in the U.S. from phones running Google’s Android software, which have been heavily promoted by Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. carrier by subscribers.

Apple plans to begin mass producing the new iPhone by the end of the year, and it would be released in the first quarter of 2011, these people said. The phone would resemble the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T, but would be based on an alternative wireless technology used by Verizon, these people said.

Verizon Wireless to Pay Refunds for Data Charges – NYTimes.com

Verizon Wireless said on Sunday that it would pay up to $90 million in refunds to 15 million cellphone customers who were wrongly charged for data sessions or Internet use, one of the largest customer refunds by a telecommunications company.

The announcement came in a statement from Verizon Wireless as the company held talks with the Federal Communications Commission about complaints of unauthorized charges and in response to questions about a possible settlement of an F.C.C. investigation into the issue.

Verizon said in its statement that the customers would receive credits from $2 to $6 on their October or November bills or, in the case of former customers, refund checks.

The refunds will be paid to customers who did not have data access plans but who were nevertheless assessed one or more charges of $1.99 because of data exchanges initiated by software built into their phones, or because of charges for inadvertently going online on the phones.

The F.C.C. is likely to press Verizon to pay a penalty for failing to notify customers of the problem, which has been occurring since at least 2007, according to people close to the talks.

AT&T, Verizon to Target Visa, MasterCard With Smartphones – Bloomberg

AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile carriers, are planning a venture to displace credit and debit cards with smartphones, posing a new threat to Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc., three people with direct knowledge of the plan said.

The partnership, which also includes Deutsche Telekom AG unit T-Mobile USA, may work with Discover Financial Services and Barclays Plc to test a system at stores in Atlanta and three other U.S. cities that would let a consumer pay with the contactless wave of a smartphone, the people said. The carriers have been searching for a chief executive officer.

AT&T Sees NY Network Upgrades Wrapped Up By 3Q, SF By 4Q – WSJ.com

AT&T Inc. (T) is expected to wrap up its network improvements for New York by the third quarter, with San Francisco to follow three months later, according to the company’s operations chief.

The Dallas telecommunications giant is working to upgrade its network in the two key media markets, which were hit by intense traffic primarily caused by the Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone. But the company has been delayed by component shortages and zoning issues, which have been particularly cumbersome in San Francisco.

The improvements are critical to AT&T repairing the reputation of the network, which suffers from the perception that its coverage lags behind rival Verizon Wireless. It also will enable the company to offer additional features, such as tethering for the iPhone, which allows a handset’s cellular signal to be used like a modem.

Other AT&T smartphones allow tethering.

“It’s taking longer than we’d like,” said John Stankey, chief executive of AT&T Operations, in an interview with Dow Jones. “The dynamics of San Francisco are different.”

The New York improvements are proceeding on schedule, he said, adding that the work in San Francisco is roughly 90 days behind as a result of the logistical complications.

Last month, the company said the number of dropped calls on its third-generation, or 3G, network fell 6% in Manhattan and 9% in the New York metropolitan area, but acknowledged that San Francisco was behind. Earlier Wednesday, Ralph de la Vega, who runs AT&T’s wireless and consumer businesses, told investors that the New York metrics have “improved significantly.”
