Silent Text app for iOS allows encrypted file transfers with self-destruct option – Computerworld

Silent Circle, a startup company that provides encrypted mobile communication services, released a new version of its Silent Text app for iOS that allows users to exchange encrypted files at the push of a button. The files can be set to self-destruct.

Silent Circle currently offers two mobile apps for encrypted communication called Silent Phone and Silent Text, but plans to add Silent Mail in the future as well. As their names suggest, these apps can be used for secure voice and video calling, secure text messaging and secure email. A fourth app Silent Eyes is available for computers and can be used for encrypted video and voice teleconferencing.

The current and future apps are free to download, but can only be used with a subscription to Silent Circle’s service that costs US$20 per month.

All of the communications pass through Silent Circle’s servers, but they do so in encrypted form. The data is encrypted locally with keys generated on the devices. The company doesn’t have access to them so it can’t see the actual content.

Microsoft Can Convert Your Voice Into Another Language | Gizmodo (Jamie Condliffe)

It’s unlikely that you speak Mandarin, but that doesn’t mean you won’t need to at some point. Now, Microsoft has created software that can analyze your speech, translate it and then spit out a new recording of your very own voice speaking in a different language.

It isn’t witchcraft though: it’s just damned clever, and a major advance in speech analysis compared to what we usually see. It’s not easy, of course. To reach a stage where this is possible requires providing the software with hours of a single person’s voice. This isn’t something that can be used by just anyone, casually.

And it’s still not perfect. It gets around one word in eight wrong. But let it off: It’s still mind-blowing to think that a computer can analyze a person’s voice, translate it, and then use knowledge of how the person sounds to recreate what they’ve said as an audio track in a different language.

Google Adds Siri-Like Voice Search to iOS App | PCMag.com (Chloe Albanesius)

Google this week unveiled a revamped search app for iOS that adds a Siri-like voice-recognition service.

The search giant said the app update brings its “most advanced voice search” to iOS. When opening the free Google Search app on your iOS device, you will be greeted with a “Try our new voice search” message above a microphone icon on the main page. Tap that microphone, and speak into the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch as if you were talking to Siri.

Words will appear on the screen as you speak, and the answer will appear below as any other search query might show up. “If it’s short and quick, like the status and departure time of your flight—Google tells you the answer aloud,” the company said in a blog post.

In Technology Wars, Using the Patent as a Sword – NYTimes.com (CHARLES DUHIGG and STEVE LOHR)

When Apple announced last year that all iPhones would come with a voice-activated assistant named Siri, capable of answering spoken questions, Michael Phillips’s heart sank.

For three decades, Mr. Phillips had focused on writing software to allow computers to understand human speech. In 2006, he had co-founded a voice recognition company, and eventually executives at Apple, Google and elsewhere proposed partnerships. Mr. Phillips’s technology was even integrated into Siri itself before the digital assistant was absorbed into the iPhone.

But in 2008, Mr. Phillips’s company, Vlingo, had been contacted by a much larger voice recognition firm called Nuance. “I have patents that can prevent you from practicing in this market,” Nuance’s chief executive, Paul Ricci, told Mr. Phillips, according to executives involved in that conversation.

Mr. Ricci issued an ultimatum: Mr. Phillips could sell his firm to Mr. Ricci or be sued for patent infringements. When Mr. Phillips refused to sell, Mr. Ricci’s company filed the first of six lawsuits.

Soon after, Apple and Google stopped returning phone calls. The company behind Siri switched its partnership from Mr. Phillips to Mr. Ricci’s firm. And the millions of dollars Mr. Phillips had set aside for research and development were redirected to lawyers and court fees.

Nuance’s Nina Platform Adds Speech Interface To Corporate Mobile Apps – Arik Hesseldahl – News – AllThingsD

If you’ve ever wanted to talk to the mobile banking application on your iPhone or Android device, you soon may get the chance. Nuance, the voice technology company best known for its Dragon Naturally Speaking line of voice applications for personal computers and Dragon Dictation on the iPhone today announced Nina, a voice platform that’s aimed at enhancing customer service applications with a Siri-like voice-control interface.

AllThingsD got a demo of the technology last week, and it basically brings together what Nuance does well: speech recognition, text-to-speech, natural language understanding and voice-ID biometric technology. It has rolled all of these into a hosted, cloud-based service that banks, insurance and other companies who make customer service and account-access applications can use to add all these features into their applications.

Nuance’s approach is to offer a pre-built Nina virtual assistant “persona,” a software developers kit, a set of APIs that companies can use to make these applications easier to use. If you can use Siri, then you’ll know what to do with Nina-enabled applications. You’ll be able to use it to pay bills, and transfer money between accounts and basic things like that.
