Shunned Profiling Technology on the Verge of Comeback – WSJ.com

One of the most potentially intrusive technologies for profiling and targeting Internet users with ads is on the verge of a comeback, two years after an outcry by privacy advocates in the U.S. and Britain appeared to kill it.

The technology, known as “deep packet inspection,” is capable of reading and analyzing the “packets” of data traveling across the Internet. It can be far more powerful than “cookies” and other techniques commonly used to track people online because it can be used to monitor all online activity, not just Web browsing. Spy agencies use the technology for surveillance.

Now, two U.S. companies, Kindsight Inc. and Phorm Inc., are pitching deep packet inspection services as a way for Internet service providers to claim a share of the lucrative online ad market.

Kindsight and Phorm say they protect people’s privacy with steps that include obtaining their consent. They also say they don’t use the full power of the technology, and refrain from reading email and analyzing sensitive online activities.

If You Don’t Want your Data Leaked via Mobile Access, Check Out This Solution

The last time we spoke about Watchdox, we told you about the many ways that you can track and control your documents when sharing. This week, Confidela, the maker of WatchDox unveiled a new iPhone and iPad application developed to ensure safe document sharing on potentially insecure mobile platforms.

Be Productive & Secure

Despite the convenience of tablets and smartphones, the reality is that we never really know how secure our information is. Considering how much information we voluntarily share, from DropBoxes to Facebook accounts, we shouldn’t risk leaking sensitive information in exchange for convenience.

In addition, as more companies begin to adapt and adopt smart technologies, they look for reassurance that although mobile devices can make employees more productive, it’s not at the expense of security. WatchDox’s application lets businesses set individualized protection parameters for user access, displaying documents on a secure viewer.

ITC to probe Apple patent claims against Motorola | Wireless – CNET News

The U.S. International Trade Commission is officially stepping in to investigate Apple’s claim of patent infringement against Motorola.

The ITC announced yesterday that its probe will examine a complaint that Apple filed with it on October 29 against Motorola. The charges are detailed in two lawsuits by Apple against Motorola in which Apple alleges that the sale of Motorola’s Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, and other smartphones and related software violate several Apple patents.

In one of the suits against Motorola, Apple cites patent No. 7,479,949, which covers methods by which touch screens detect contact with fingers. The two other patents included in this suit are Nos. 6,493,002 and 5,838,315, both of which refer to elements of the graphical user interface. The other suit refers to patent Nos. 7,812,828, 7,663,607, and 5,379,430, which also focus on technologies for the touch screen and GUI.

Twitter looks to create new news network – The China Post

Biz Stone, the co-founder of popular microblogging site Twitter, is eager to harness the vast quantities of information that it helps its users share to create a news network, he told Reuters on Monday.

A Twitter news network would not necessarily be run by Twitter itself but would be in partnership with several existing news organizations, and would be open, Stone said.

“From the very beginning this has seemed almost as if it’s a news wire coming from everywhere around the world,” he told Reuters Television on the sidelines of the Silicon Valley Comes to Oxford technology event.

“I think a Twitter News Service would be something that would be very open and shared with many different news organizations around the world.”

UPDATE: Acer Unveils Line Of Tablets To Enter Rapidly Growing Market – WSJ.com

Acer Inc. (ACEIY, 2353.TW) unveiled its first line of tablet personal computers Tuesday as the PC giant looks to expand into the rapidly growing market.

The company plans to release three tablets early next year, with screens from 7 inches to 10.1 inches. The first 10.1-inch tablet, based on the Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Windows platform, will be released in February. The company will also release two tablets using Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android platform in April, one 7 inch and one 10.1 inch.

In addition, Acer will introduce a new 4.8-inch smartphone running on Android and a new dual, 14-inch touchscreen PC it dubbed the Iconia Touchbook. Iconia closes like a notebook but opens to reveal a second touchscreen in place of a keyboard.

With close to 19 million tablets sold worldwide this year, and 54.8 million units expected to be sold in 2011, the company said the market is poised for entry.

President and Chief Executive Gianfranco Lanci said at the tablet launch event in New York that people are moving from creating content to consuming content, and they need a variety of devices for the different needs. He said there likely will be a variety of form factors and devices in the future.

Acer is the latest PC maker to join the tablet PC bandwagon after Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPad attracted strong consumer demand. Many device makers including BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM, RIM.T), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and Samsung Electronics Co. (SSNHY, 005930.SE), have recently announced plans to introduce tablets to compete with Apple’s wildly popular product.

For two years, Acer has relied on netbooks–tiny, stripped-down laptops–to propel growth. The company’s products, especially its Aspire One, proved so popular, Acer vaulted over Dell Inc. (DELL) to become the world’s second-largest computer maker by computer shipments behind Hewlett-Packard.

Just in Time for the Holidays: The Largest Insider-Trading Case Ever? – Law Blog – WSJ

The Wall Street Journal broke the news over the weekend that federal authorities are about to bring a huge insider-trading case against a host of financial players. According to Saturday’s story, the case could “ensnare consultants, investment bankers, hedge-fund and mutual-fund traders, and analysts across the nation.”

The criminal and civil probes are examining whether multiple insider-trading rings reaped illegal profits totaling tens of millions of dollars, people close to the investigation say. Some charges could be brought before year-end.

One focus of the criminal investigation is whether nonpublic information was passed along by independent analysts and consultants who work for companies that provide “expert network” services to hedge funds and mutual funds.

In another aspect of the probes, prosecutors and regulators are examining whether Goldman Sachs bankers leaked information about transactions, including health-care mergers, in ways that benefited certain investors, the people say. Goldman declined to comment.

Independent analysts and research boutiques also are being examined. John Kinnucan, a principal at Broadband Research LLC in Portland, Ore., sent an email on Oct. 26 to roughly 20 hedge-fund and mutual-fund clients telling of a visit by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Today two fresh faced eager beavers from the FBI showed up unannounced (obviously) on my doorstep thoroughly convinced that my clients have been trading on copious inside information,” the email said. “(They obviously have been recording my cell phone conversations for quite some time, with what motivation I have no idea.) We obviously beg to differ, so have therefore declined the young gentleman’s gracious offer to wear a wire and therefore ensnare you in their devious web.”
